Food is closely related to people's health. The health and safety of food is also the most concerned, so the requirements for food packaging are particularly strict. In the field of food packaging, plastic composite flexible packaging accounts for a considerable proportion. Relevant experts have clearly pointed out the new direction of future development of food flexible packaging: improving existing plastic properties, developing new varieties, improving strength and barrier 
properties, reducing dosage (thick wall), reusing, sorting and recycling to protect the environment.

New high barrier plastics have been widely used

This packaging material not only enhances the protection of food, but also reduces the amount of plastic used and can even be reused. For processed foods requiring high barrier protection, as well as vacuum packaging, air-filled packaging, etc., it is generally required to be packaged in composite materials, and there must be more than one layer of high-barrier materials in the multilayer composite material. Commonly used high barrier materials are aluminum foil, nylon, polyester, and the like. As foods have improved protection requirements, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers and polyvinyl alcohols with better barrier properties have also begun to be applied. At present, PEN (polyethylene naphthalate), which is developed in developed countries and has a small amount of application, brings many advantages to food packaging. The chemical structure of PEN is similar to that of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), but the rigidity is greatly improved, the oxygen barrier property and water resistance are several times higher than that of PET, and the ultraviolet absorption is good and the gas adsorption is low. The food is not tasteful and can be reused.

 

Inorganic high-barrier microwave food packaging materials will become a new favorite

With the accelerated pace of life, food packaging that can be directly used for microwave heating has become a new hot spot in the field of packaging. Since the packaging made of aluminum foil and some plastic composite materials is currently opaque, difficult to recycle, and cannot be used for microwave processing, the SiOx material developed in recent years can be used as a substitute. SiOx is a thin layer of silicon oxide plated on substrates such as PET, PA, PP, etc. It not only has better barrier properties, but also has excellent atmospheric environment adaptability. Its barrier properties are virtually unaffected by changes in ambient humidity and temperature. SiOx coating has high barrier property, high microwave permeability and transparency. It can be used for soft packaging of microwave processed foods, and can also be used as packaging containers for beverages and edible oils. The cost of SiOx coating is high, and the mass production technology is still not perfect, but due to its special properties, it will become an important packaging material for this century.
